Testing Tech Preview and Experimental Features in ODP

What is Tech Preview?​

Tech Preview features are components included in ODP that are available for testing and evaluation purposes. They are not recommended for production use. Tech Preview features may lack the full test coverage, documentation, and operational maturity of Generally Available (GA) components.

Including a feature as Tech Preview allows the community and early adopters to evaluate the functionality, provide feedback, and help shape its path to GA status. Tech Preview features may change in behavior, configuration interface, or upgrade path between releases without prior notice.

Not for Production Use

Tech Preview features are provided for testing only. Clemlab does not guarantee upgrade support, data compatibility, or configuration stability for Tech Preview components between ODP releases.

Current Tech Preview Features in ODP 1.3.2.0​

The following components are designated as Tech Preview in ODP 1.3.2.0:

Polaris REST Catalog​

Apache Polaris is an open-source REST catalog for Apache Iceberg. In ODP 1.3.2.0, Polaris is included as a Tech Preview component managed via Apache Ambari. It enables a unified catalog interface for Iceberg tables accessible by Spark, Trino, and other compatible engines.

  • Service port: 8181
  • Status: Tech Preview — not recommended for production workloads
  • Known limitation: Multi-realm Polaris configurations are not yet supported through Ambari

Kudu​

Apache Kudu is a columnar storage engine designed for fast analytics on rapidly changing data. It integrates with Impala for SQL access and with Spark for batch and streaming workloads.

  • Status: Tech Preview — requires SSDs for tablet server storage
  • Known limitation: Kudu tablet server co-location with HDFS DataNodes is not recommended; use dedicated nodes

Ambari Kubernetes View​

The Ambari Kubernetes View provides a basic monitoring interface for Kubernetes workloads from within the Ambari Web UI. This view is experimental and subject to significant changes.

  • Status: Tech Preview / Experimental
  • Known limitation: Read-only; no lifecycle management actions are supported

When filing an issue, please include:

  • ODP version
  • Component name and version
  • Steps to reproduce
  • Relevant log excerpts from /var/log/ on affected hosts

Upgrade Support Warning​

Upgrade Path Not Guaranteed

Tech Preview features do not carry a guaranteed upgrade path between ODP versions. When a Tech Preview component reaches GA status in a future release, a migration procedure will be documented. However, in-place upgrades from Tech Preview configurations are not guaranteed and may require manual intervention or data re-ingestion.

Always back up metadata and configuration before upgrading a cluster that has Tech Preview features enabled.
